When the Yeezy Slide first arrived on the scene back in the summer of 2019, it’s fair to say it was greeted by a mixed reception. While for some it was love at first sight, others weren’t so enamoured with this weird and wacky take on the slider, slanderously referring to it as the “Yeezy Croc”. Harsh words and not ones Kanye’s notoriously large ego would have taken lightly!
To be fair, the criticism it received wasn’t much of a surprise. When you create an off-the-wall shoe such as the Yeezy Slide, you’re bound to get a few detractors along the way. With that said, without Ye’s ‘two-fingers’ approach to footwear design, it’s highly unlikely his Yeezy project would have become even remotely as big as it is today.
For those who did appreciate the Yeezy Slide, there’s some great news as the eccentric silhouette is about to arrive in four brand new colours. A pack of three will land on April 21st, with a further colourway expected a couple months after that. The updates will come in a lime green, clean white, teal blue and a brown, although at this stage it’s not clear which will arrive first.
Despite receiving a tonne of flack from some quarters, the simplistic slider flew off the shelves last time around, and a quick look at the resale market will tell you a pair of the previous releases will set you back a few hundred quid – multiple times the retail price.
Whether or not they’ll be snapped up with such rigour this time around remains to be seen. For whatever reason, Yeezy releases haven’t generated the furore we’re used to seeing from the Adidas imprint, but whether that’s a blip or something more permanent remains to be seen. The popularity of the Slide update might be a good indicator so perhaps things will become clever when they drop.
