Vans are ready for another renaissance as the esteemed streetwear label joins forces with MoMA to introduce a brand-new art-inspired collection adorned with some of the world’s most famous paintings.
Featuring work from esteemed painters including Salvador Dali, Vasily Kandinsky, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Jackson Pollock, Lybov Popova and Faith Ringgold, the collection will land in a two-part series and feature special edition sneakers as well as clothing inspired by some of the great artists’ most famous pieces.
This isn’t the first time the brand has teamed up for an artistic collab. In the past Vans have had massive success while working on projects with the Van Gough Museum, so they’ve decided to pair up once again for another art-focused collaboration – this time with the New York-based Museum of Modern Art.
As well as providing an artistic update to the brand’s most popular silhouettes, the collection will also feature a variation of Vans’ classic checkerboard design that’ll include the MoMA branding, as well as a customisable kids collection which allows the youngsters to swap around elements of the shoe in what’s seemingly an effort to stimulate some juvenile interest in the artwork.
In the first part of the collection, Dali’s iconic The Persistence of Memory painting will adorn the sides of the fan-favourite Vans Comfycush Old Skool silhouette, which will also arrive alongside a matching long-sleeve sweatshirt and t-shirt for those looking to complete the look. This iteration of the famous style has been given a typical Dali distortion, with the patented lines down the lateral warped to represent the distorted nature of the artwork.
Elsewhere in the first drop, Kandinsky’s abstract-focused work will make an appearance on the Vans slip-on silhouette, and a painting from Monet’s stunning Waterlilies Series dresses the Vans Authentic silhouette to round off the initial series magnificently. Both of these styles will come with a range of matching apparel and accessories including caps, hoodies and backpacks.
The first part of the collection is set to drop on September 30. It’ll be available online, at Vans stores, MoMA store locations and select Vans retailers. The second edition of the collection is set to land some time in November, although not much else is currently known. As soon as more information is released, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
