Everyone knows the footwear and fashion industry is one of the world’s leading polluters, so it is important to see big brands facing the future and making big changes in an attempt to save the planet.
Their latest collection, the “Space Hippie” pack is Nike’s showcase of sustainable sneaker production. In this pack they have introduced new innovations and sustainable materials including Crater Foam and a Space Waste Yarn upper constructed using 80-95% recycled materials and offcuts from previous works.
Each Space Hippie model also uses ZoomX insoles, which takes ZoomX scrap waste from the factory floor and gives it a second lease of life. These new production techniques also help produce the unique flecked colourways for the “Space Hippie” aesthetic.
Space Hippie 01
The first shoe in the lineup is the collection’s most traditional looking running shoes. The upper is low cut and contains a classic lacing system.
The upper aesthetic is made up of the Wolf Grey with red Swoosh branding and the laces are given a yellow climbing-rope look. The eyelets are constructed using exterior cord stitched into the midfoot and ribbon that sits under the laces. The Crater Foam outsole, with full length ZoomX insole, has the neon flecked 80’s vibe colouring.
Space Hippie 02
For the second iteration Nike has done away with the lacing for a slip on piece of footwear with a complete sock fit upper slightly heightening the cut for added stability. Instead of lacing, Nike has included loops on the heel and top of the foot.
The Swoosh branding moves further forward on the foot and helps bring to mind Nike’s Mercurial football silo. The sole is the same across models one, two and three; chunky with a rugged, teeth-like centre for added comfort and grip.
Space Hippie 03
Said to be the most limited of the four releases is this high top sneaker. Why is it so limited: because of the small supply of Flyease for the shoe’s exterior. The pull-strap and heel-release are all made form recycled materials. The shoe also contains a Fast Fit mechanism to replace the usual lacing system that was originally produced for the 1.0 units.
Space Hippie 04
The 04 Space Hippie will be the first to break away from the same midsole as 1-3 with its own brand new Crater Foam midsole shape in white and a lower cut upper than the 01 has. This look has the most traditional lacing system with clean white laces and a large heel tab that reaches right across the shoes upper.
